To Baron's point, a riot shield in a wooded combat area is pretty ridiculous. For Airsoft use, I would think any shield would have to be destructible (or maybe perforated with holes) so it did not grant the user complete invincibility. However, we don't want cardboard scraps all over the woods, so there really isn't a solution for us.
If we ever do an actual CQB/MOUT environment, maybe, but for our current games out at the Menard Center woods, I'm going to rule that shields are a no-go, on the grounds that 1. a shield in the woods would be a bit silly, and 2. a gameplay-balanced destructible shield will leave behind too much litter. Spend the money on some better camo/equipment and come to our training day on 9/8 to learn how to best utilize the cover that's already around you.
